How do I prepare for a CPA preparatory course exam?

With CPA preparatory course exams approaching, we thought it would be helpful to share ideas on how to prepare.

1. Attend the exam review webinar (available for core courses)

Review your course’s D2L page for details regarding the facilitator-led exam review webinar and plan to attend live, if possible. Exam review webinars will be recorded and posted for those who cannot attend live or want to review later.

2. Read the exam blueprint

The exam blueprint outlines the structure of the exam and its composition. Confirming exam details, like length, question type, and potential number of questions will help you feel more prepared and allow you to practice appropriately.

3. Read the exam regulations, rules/ instructions, and examinable standards

The exam regulations outline the exam rules, and the examinable standards clarify the Handbook standards and tax rates that are examinable. You are expected to be familiar with both, and in cases of breach of the examination rules, pleas of accident or forgetfulness will not be accepted under any circumstances.

4. Practice using the retired exam questions and solutions, or the sample exam questions

Example examination questions, with solutions, are provided for your reference and we encourage students to practice with them. The questions are similar to what you will see on the final examination!

5. Practice using your BA II Plus calculator

The approved calculator in the CPA program is the Texas Instruments BA II Plus. Knowing how to use this calculator efficiently and effectively is essential for success in the CPA preparatory courses, especially in the exam setting. Tips for setting up your calculator and practice problems are available here

6. Prepare for the virtual exam environment

Due to the ongoing impacts of COVID-19, exams for preparatory courses are being delivered remotely through D2L. To prepare for this type of exam environment, ensure you’ve selected an exam writing space that is as free from distractions as possible. You should also ensure that your computer meets the prescribed hardware, operating system, software, and other requirements specified in the Learning management system and computer requirements section of the CPA Canada Preparatory Courses Student Guide.

7. Get some rest

It’s tempting to stay up late the night before an exam to cram, but remember, your brain needs to be fresh and well-rested to perform well on an exam. So, shut the books early in the evening and get a good night’s rest!
