In alignment with our commitment to reconciliation, CPAWSB staff recently took part in a meaningful learning event co-hosted by AFOA Alberta on Thursday, October 3. This event focused on Jordan’s Principle, a pivotal topic in the pursuit of equitable healthcare and social services for First Nations children. Several distinguished speakers shared their insights and experiences, shedding light on critical issues affecting Indigenous communities.

Dr. Charles Vincent Old Woman shared his personal experience in the residential school system, offering a profound perspective on the lasting impacts of these institutions on Indigenous communities.

Justin Jimmy CPA, CAFM, ICD.D, Kelly Provost, and Melissa Dixon discussed the ongoing struggles faced by Indigenous people living on reserves, highlighting critical issues such as access to essential services and the lack of Indigenous representation in professions like accounting. A key theme was the shortage of CPAs within Indigenous communities, emphasizing the need for more professionals to support financial literacy and economic growth.

Michael Zubach CA, CPA, CAFM shared his experience of working with Indigenous clients across Canada, providing assurance and advisory services and discussing the unique financial challenges these communities face.

Robert Andrews DBA, MBA, CPA, CMA concluded the learning event with a discussion on how Indigenous communities are chronically underfunded, emphasizing the financial barriers that must be addressed for true reconciliation and equitable development.
